Importing financial data calendars in VueMinder

Postby sonia33 » Wed Aug 17, 2016 9:35 am

Hi,

One of the most time-consuming weekly task for financial traders is managing economic calendars so to be alerted when a scheduled event is due. Typically it is an economic data release, a speech by a central banker, etc.

There are several web sites that publish a weekly or daily calendar but the issues is to be alerted and personalize effectively such alerts (e.g. with a pop up on screen, a countdown timer, customized sound, sms, email...).

Usually there are no online sound alerts or the way they are offered is not customizable.

So the question is simple: are you able/ willing to develop a way to import those data calendars automatically in VueMinder and let the software manage those events with proper alerts choices selected by the user?

Hope the question is clear.

Thank you for your time and support.

Kind regards
Sonia

Hi Sonia, welcome to the forums. If the websites make an iCalendar (ics) URL available, VueMinder can subscribe to the URL. You could then edit the events to add reminders. To subscribe to an iCalendar URL, click the "File -> Add Calendar -> Add Calendar Subscription" menu command.

If a URL isn't available but you're able to download an ICS file, you can import the ICS file into VueMinder using the "File -> Import -> Import Events" menu command.

If there's no ability to access an iCalendar URL or download and ICS file, then it might not be possible for VueMinder to integrate with the calendars on the websites.

Hi Dan,
Thank you for your feedback.

"You could then edit the events to add reminders"... What is worrying me is that 'add reminders': is there a way to perform that task with a wizard /macro so all the the imported events automatically will be be appended with a reminder to be performed e.g. 3 minutes ahead of each them?
The goal of this calendar management is automation, not to be forced to edit manually the reminders each week for each event.

Kind regards,
Sonia

Hi Sonia, you can define default reminder settings in VueMinder (Pro and Ultimate, NOT Lite), These settings can be used for calendar subscriptions or when importing from an ICS file.

Here's how to configure default reminder settings when adding a new calendar subscription:
1. Click "File -> Add Calendar -> Add Calendar Subscription".
2. Enter the URL for the subscription on the "Sync" tab.
3. Switch to the "Event Defaults" tab and define the default reminder settings. You could configure VueMinder to send email, SMS, popup reminders, or do any combination of those reminders.
4. Click the OK button. Any events that occur in the future or within the last 7 days will automatically have a reminder enabled. Reminders will also be automatically added to any new events that are detected when the calendar syncs.

Here's how to configure default reminder settings that will be used when importing from an ICS file.
1. If you don't already have a calendar defined that will be associated with the imported events, create a calendar using the "File -> New -> Calendar" menu command.
2. Open the Calendar Properties of the calendar that will contain the imported events.
3. Define the default reminder settings on the "Event Defaults" tab.
4. Use the "File -> Import -> Import Events" menu command to import the ICS file.
5. Make sure to select the correct destination calendar (the one that has your default reminder settings) using the drop-down list near the top of the Import Events window.
6. Make sure the "Use destination calendar defaults" box is checked.
7. Click Next to complete the import. The imported events will have reminders automatically assigned, except for events that occurred more than 7 days ago.

I hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any other questions.
