Traditional UI tweaks

Have a great idea on how VueMinder could be improved? Post it here!

Traditional UI tweaks

These requests would reduce UI friction and improve the user experience, as in, make it faster.
- In all views, provide ability to edit Event Title in place (Timeline already does this)
- In all views, <Enter> key should do the same as double-click: open Event Detail editor (several views already do this but Events list does not)
- When opening Event Detail editor, set focus to Title field.

Under 'My Calendars', in a Calendar's context menu (single Calendar / right-click), wishing for a feature like "Display only this Calendar". Basically a shortcut for un-checking all the other Calendars, to quickly see just one color-set of events in the calendar view.

Hi Bilbo, thank you for the suggestions. I've added these to my to-do list and will post a reply when they are completed.

Hi Bilbo, a beta of version 2016.00 is available. This version implements your suggestion to use the Enter key to open items in the Event List. It also adds a "Show Only this Calendar" context menu command when right-clicking a calendar's name.

I couldn't duplicate the problem with the Title field not having initial input focus, so that might or might not be fixed. I'll investigate further.

As for providing the ability to do in place editing of titles on the Month view, there are some limitations in a 3rd party component I'm using which prevent this from working. I could make it work by removing the option to word-wrap titles, but I think word-wrap is more useful than in-place editing.

A beta of VueMinder 2016 is available and can be downloaded here:

The "Show Only this" feature in the new release is terrific! Thank you :)

Event editor title-focus might misbehave (or only appear to) only on Win 8.0? Or it might be fixed in the new UI - will look for it during the shakedown cruise. It's fine on Vista Home Basic.

Agree word-wrap is more useful than in-place edit.

Now maybe we could use an extra "Show All Calendars"? (The Group-Name three-state checkbox already functions as Show-All.)

If we wanted a visible menu item for this in the Calendar name context menu, then it could be a separate menu item, or an overloaded context-sensitive item. As in ... If only one calendar is Shown, and user right-clicks on that calendar, then "Show Only this" does not apply, because we are already in that state. If the Show-Only menu item were grey/unavailable, that would be reasonable. Or, the menu item could change to display a Show-All label and perform the Show-All function if clicked.

Which brings me back to the tri-state checkbox on the Calendar Group name. Maybe an item on its right-click menu could be "Invert Display" as in, un-check/hide the checked/displayed calendars and check/display the un-checked/hidden calendars. Going one further, maybe this idea could be carried back to the single calendar name context menu, which could have a "Show all Except this Calendar" (kinda the opposite of "Show Only this").

Kudos on the improvements :)

Hi Bilbo, thank you for the feedback. I'm trying to avoid providing too many options on the right-click menu. If you want all calendars to be visible, you can click the X button below the calendar list (where a label shows how many calendars are currently filtered) or you can use the "Show All Events" command on the View menu (or press the Ctrl+Shift+S shortcut).

After showing all events, if you want to filter one calendar in particular, you can use its checkbox. Personally, I think this approach is more intuitive than a right-click option of "Show All Except This Calendar" option. I think adding that option would be too confusing, especially when the checkboxes do the same thing.

Please let me know if you have any other suggestions.

Totally makes sense, thanks.

Now for a different bug: What happened to Alt-F for the File menu? How can I turn the accelerator keys back on for menu navigation? I know this is an issue with MS-style apps in general. Pressing F10 to put focus on the menu bar does something wrong. It bring up dialogs: Share Calendar error message, then Options/Sharing, then Calendar Properties. Very disconcerting.

Hi Bilbo, the menu accelerator keys were removed when VueMinder was translated into 30+ other languages, back in version 11.0. This was due to each language needing its own accelerators and the amount of effort required to define accelerators for all the supported languages.

In any case, I'll add the accelerators back into the next release. I'll also change the Share Calendar command to use a shortcut other than F10. I'll post a reply when the next release is completed (probably within the next day or two).

Keyboard accelerators (like Alt+F for the File menu) have been added to version 2016.01. The accelerators are based on the current language. For example, when using English, you can press Alt+F to access the File menu, and then X to exit.

The F10 key will also activate the main menu.
